Golfer’s Guide to Brain Management
Below are the Learning Style types that combine the preferred sensory system with the preference of left or right brain.
Included for each Style are the learning preferences, the type of cues each prefers, and the weaknesses of each type that could interfere with success in learning and performing.
VISUAL RIGHT (V-R)
Preferred Learning Methods:
Use colored pictures, illustrations, videos, PowerPoints; focus on whole swing or shot image first, before breaking down into step by step.
Cues:
Single visual image in color of whole motion, target, or swing position.
Avoid Weaknesses:
Think and move too fast.
Create too many images over ball.
Too much inner talk.
VISUAL LEFT (V-L)
Preferred Learning Methods:
Use visual guides - pictures, books, PowerPoints, mirrors; can break down into detail.
Likes sequential learning.
Cues:
Single visual image or target, finish.
Avoid Weaknesses:
Think and move too fast.
Create too many images over ball.
Too much inner talk.
AUDITORY LEFT (A-L)
Preferred Learning Methods:
Likes verbal instruction, with detail.
Can tape record or use video with auditory guidance.
Likes sequential learning and likes to discuss and get confirmation with verbal feedback.
Cues: Single cue consisting of a word, words, or a phrase.
Avoid Weaknesses:
Too much inner talk.
Too much negative inner critical talk.
AUDITORY RIGHT (A-R)
Preferred Learning Methods:
Observe swing or motion by demo or video with sound effects, music, or short action key words.
Instructor should use few words.
Tape record the instruction with music or sound effects or short key action words.
Cues:
Whistling, humming,
Word or phrase with sound effects or music.
Avoid Weaknesses:
Too fast.
Too much inner talk.
Too much verbal direction.
TACTILE LEFT (T-L)
Preferred Learning Methods:
Write notes to confirm instruction.
Sequential, step by step, outlines of learning materials.
Likes positive feelings, instructors and players.
Verbal or written feedback from instructor.
Cues:
Single feeling cue involving hands and feelings or sense of touch.
Create a peaceful place and maintain through execution.
Feelings of swing.
Likes using hands.
Avoid Weaknesses:
Negativity of others, negative tone of voice, facial expressions, body language.
Negative situations that cause physical discomfort.
TACTILE RIGHT (T-R)
Preferred Learning Methods:
Draws sketches, takes notes, or views pictures or sketches in books and magazines.
View whole swing as demo or in video first and then break into details.
Can choose to learn with or without music.
Likes being outdoors, using hands.
Learns when instructor and others are liked.
Cues:
Feeling cue involving hands, feelings, or sense of touch.
Create sense of a peaceful internal place.
Hands and heart work together.
Use favorites - clothes, gloves, ball, etc.
Play with others you like and select an instructor you like.
Avoid Weaknesses:
Negative sense of instructor or other players in group by negative tone of voice, facial expressions, body language.
Over sensitive about pleasing others.
Often concerned about creating stress for others instead of focusing on golf shot.
KINESTHETIC LEFT (K-L)
Preferred Learning Methods:
Likes using large motor muscles to learn.
Views demo or video and moves with it and verbal direction with key action words.
Likes organized sequential details while in motion.
Likes competition in learning and tracking improvement.
Likes comfortable clothing for freedom to move.
Cues:
Relaxation in body.
Feeling motion of swing in their large muscles.
Likes feel of feet connected to earth.
Likes cues involving particular position or motion and cues that capture sense of large motion movement, i.e. smooth.
Avoid Weaknesses:
Tension and restricted motion.
Talking or listening too much distracts from motion.
Due to need to win, avoid giving up, quitting, or shutting down if a mistake is made.
Learn that mistakes are positive steps in the learning process.
KINESTHETIC RIGHT (K-R)
Preferred Learning Methods:
Views whole swing by demo or video with a few key action words of explanation.
Likes nonverbal instruction.
Likes staying in motion while learning.
Likes competition and games in learning and tracking improvement.
Can choose to use music or no music.
Cues:
Relaxation in body.
Identify areas where most stress tends to occur.
Cue can be a particular position or motion or cues that capture sense of large motion movement i.e. smooth.
Avoid Weaknesses:
Tension and restricted motion.
Talking or listening too much distracts from motion.
Due to need to win, avoid getting frustrated, quitting, giving up or shutting down if mistake is made.
